The Panther premiership pursuit
has commenced in triumph for our u17 Panthers. Our top Panther
'cub' side securing a 4-2 victory over Moorebank on Friday night
to take out the u17 Div 1 premiership...the first for Ryde in 23
years...Congratulations to all involved.
Four of our mens teams have booked a place in finals
action next week 7th, 6th, 4th & 3rd Grade. A number of those
teams having to win their last game to ensure their spot in a
closely contested race to the finals. The most notable of these,
4th grade who needed to defeat 3rd place Sutherland on Saturday
and did so with a breakaway goal in the last 30 seconds of the
game and 3rd grade who had to win their last 3 matches against
'top 4' contenders to cement their finals spot and did so in
style, without conceding a goal.
Two of our womens teams had a similar weekend with 2nd &
5th grade needing to win their games to advance to the
finals...both teams won and with 3rd grade assured of a finals
berth we have 3 out 6 teams into the finals. Our other teams
finished mid table or higher...a solid result overall for the
women this year showing good growth in our player talent and
excellent prospects for the future.
There are a few Panther 'cub' teams into grand finals as
well...
u11 Panthers
u11 Black Tigers
u13 Black Tigers
u13 Panthers
u15 Panthers
u17 Tigers (major semi)
So watch out for my next email with your weekend itinerary of
Panther hockey viewing.
Lastly and Most Importantly we will need some volunteers to man
the BBQ next Saturday running all day from early for junior
grand finals followed by 4 x mens semi's (including our 3rd &
4th grade) ...JUST 1 HOUR of your time would help out a lot!

Next Year
Please give some thought to whether you might like to take on a
small role in running your club next year?
Whether that be coaching a junior (or senior) team, managing a
team, acting as a registrar or helping out with admin or
organising functions. We will publish a list of roles available
shortly along with a brief description of what each role
entails. None of the jobs will be exhausting or particularly
difficult. Watch this space...

Ryde Vets Excel at Bathurst
Sydney Veterans Hockey Association took two teams to the overs
40's Mens Veterans State Championships at Bathurst last weekend.
The teams boasted no less than 12 Ryde players. It was set to be
an exciting, but cold, weekend of hockey.
The Sydney A Division team dominated the whole weekend only
letting in 2 goals in total and scoring 15, and scored first in
a tight final, however Parkes managed to scrape a goal to make
it 1-1 from the 3rd Penalty Corner after the final whistle. No
goals were scored in extra time and it went to strokes, Steve
Ford saved a couple but unfortunately Parkes scored more than
the A grade in the flick off, taking the championship honours on
the day. Three years in a row of final losses for the gun Sydney
A side
Ryde players for the A grade were as follows;
Andy Grimes – Vice Captain
Richard Ellison
Mark Ellis
Dave McKenzie
The Sydney B Division team went through unbeaten for the whole
weekend, which now makes the B team unbeaten in 2 years as we
won last year without losing a game also.
The final was against Central Coast who we beat 1-0 in a very
closely contested game, the winner coming from a great run by
Bryn who ran through 3 players dragged the keeper and passed it
to Dunny who cracked the goal in.
We then kept them out at the back with Graham and David working
really well together and a few saves thrown in by yours truly J
Ryde players involved were as follows for B grade;
Steve Dunn – Vice Captain
Phil Welsman
Scott Morrison
Graham Symes
Fraser Larcombe
Kerry Marthick
David Phelan
Bryn Furmidge
Amauri Amat (withdrawn injured)
Selected in the NSW O40 1's team were Mark Ellis & Andrew
Grimes, NSW O40 2's Scott Morrison, NSW O40 3's Bryn Furmidge.
Kerry Marthick (shadow)
Ryde is proud of our large representative participation and the
performances of our veteran players...Congratulations

Vale Romeo Carinci
In case you are unaware it is with great sadness that I pass on
the following news that UTS Vets player – Romeo Carinci (age 47)
has passed away as a result of a tragic motor cycle accident
yesterday at Peats Ridge
Romeo has been the Team Co-ordinator for UTS Men’s Vets hockey
for past few years and was a lively guy both on and off the
hockey field – he will be missed
Romeo joined UTS Hockey Club in 2000, as part of the
Forest/Lavender Hill Hockey team that joined us that season. He
has managed our men’s Veterans team in the past 2 years. He had
been a committed club member, as both player and supporter,
since joining. He has a son 15, and daughter 13. He was 47 years
old.
Romeo was an amazing character, and was well known to all who
played with him, and against him. He will be greatly missed.
With great sadness

This is just a general reminder about the 35’s for this year –
so if you have not already can you please ensure that you get
your nomination form in to Merv Goodridge as soon as possible –
we are looking to go back to back in 2010, however be aware that
other Teams are now also building up and I am aware that Parkes,
Illawarra and Bathurst already have indicated that they will
have stronger teams than 2009
Also please keep on the look out within your own Sydney clubs
for players who will turn 35 in 2010 and who are interested in
being involved – generally they should be playing either 1st or
2nd Grade
I hope that you will be playing in the 35’s Tournament in July
with Sydney so if you haven’t already can you please fill in the
form attached and send it in to ensure that you are considered
for selection
Look forward to hearing from you and catching up soon

Panthers Roar in the Hunter -
Sydney teams get revenge over country rivals in Hunter Cup
Sunday, 07 March 2010 22:15
The Hunter Cup finals today saw some excellent action on the
turf at Newcastle.
SF 1 saw South’s defeat Maitland 4-3 in golden goal extra time.
South’s took a lead into the break with Kyle Bosworth and Todd
Palmer scoring for the Lions before Peter Urquhart was able to
make the best of a PC routine gone wrong for Maitland. Matt
Brown drew the Rams level at the 45 minute mark to set the scene
for an exciting finish to the game. Simon Vimpani put South’s
3-2 up with 8 minutes to go with a lovely back stick shot from
the top of the D, but Nathan Baker was able to deceive the
South’s defence with a clever slow ball with 4 minutes to go to
square it all up and into ET. 4 minutes in, John Fernance stole
the ball from the Rams defender, stepped the keeper and slotted
home the winner.
SF 2 saw Ryde easily account for cross town rivals Glebe. 5-0
was the score line with Matt Wright, A Caton, Duncan Pearce and
Nic McEwen getting the goals for the panthers. Glebe showed
glimpses of their ability but just couldn’t get the job done
down in the circle.
The 3rd Place playoff saw Match day 1 combatants Glebe and
Maitland at it again. Most people would of tipped the Rams to
win this one based on last weeks result and the form of the 2
teams in the semi’s, but Glebe showed why they are a force in
the Sydney competition with a convincing 6-3 victory. Michael
Wark scored a hat trick and Jake Ribarovski, Peter Wark and Ross
Bougoukas got the other goals. The Rams were not at the same
intensity as they had shown in the semi final, but would still
be pleased with their efforts. Ben Urquhart got a double for the
Rams before Cayde Tasker scored near fulltime to add some
respectability to the score.
The final saw match day 1 combatant Ryde and South Newcastle
renew acquaintances. South’s came into the game on the back of a
tough semi over Maitland, and a psychological advantage having
accounted for the Panthers in Match day 1 3-2. Ryde have been up
the freeway now 2 years in a row contesting Pre Season in
Newcastle and have been in the final of those events now both
times. This time though they were playing for the bounty of
$1000 and a crack at the defending Hunter Coast Premier Hockey
League champions.
South’s got off
to a good start after just 5 minutes when Kyle Bosworth smashed
a curling dipping shot from a PC, just nudging the top of the
backboard. Ryde responded and drew level after 25 mins when Alex
Braude scored a simple tap in. 3 minutes later Bosworth notched
his second from another PC, before Cameron Brown got Panthers
back on level terms with a field goal just 30 seconds later.
Right on half time Brown converted a PC to give Ryde the lead at
the break.
Matt Wright
scored after 45 minutes and the pressure was on South’s to
respond and the man of the moment Kyle Bosworth smashed home a
goal to trail 4-3. It was pretty tense for the next 10 minutes
as both teams tried to establish their dominance, however with
12 minutes to go the wind was knocked out of South’s sails as
Alex Braude received the ball on the dot before turning and
beating Wade shamrock in the South goal for a 5-3 lead.
At this point
the tide turned in favour of ryde, who were able to take full
advantage of their youth and maintain the high tempo as South’s
began to tire. Goals to Wright and Ben Craig blew the score out
to 7-3 at fulltime. A highly entertaining game.
Congratulations to Ryde for their victory.
Big thank you to all the clubs who competed. Also thanks to the
umpires today, Stewart, Scott, John and Dave, your efforts were
appreciated.
Once again thank you and good luck with your 2011 premiership
campaigns.

HUNTER CUP MATCHDAY 1 RESULTS
Hi All

Semi Finals to be played next Sunday 7th March...wish the boys
good luck ...& bring home the trophy!...

Hunter Hockey website

All,
Great day of hockey, thanks for participating.
There were some good close games, and some not so close results,
but there is no doubt if it wasn’t such a hot day and clubs were
meeting for the first time on the day, those big scores would
have been not so big. All games were settled in regulation time,
no strokes were required.
Souths and Maitland go through having won both their games.
Wests and Chatham were eliminated with no wins.
That left Ryde, Glebe and Norths on 1 win each and 1 loss each.
Ryde had a goal difference of +8, Norths had a goal difference
of 0. As a result, Ryde would be ranked higher and get the 4th
spot for the finals. Norths would be the unlucky team to miss
out.
So congratulations to Souths, Maitland, Glebe and Ryde.
