Around the Grounds - What a
Weekend
Dear Players and Families,
We have had many fantastic weekends thus far this year but the
weekend past was pretty special.
We will start with our surprise packets the U11 Black Tigers who
have just carried all before them in the last quarter of the
season. They took on Minor Premiers Briars and the grandstand
was just abuzz. The first half was a scoreless affair but one
thing was certain - the Black Tigers were in this contest big
time. Yet it was Briars who opened the scoring in the second
half- a well taken chance from just a sniff of an opportunity.
Matt Topfer's instruction to his team emphasised the need for a
goal and the team duly responded. Three bustling raids into the
circle did not yield the result but the fourth, from a short
corner, did. The contest remained just that until full-time when
we entered two five minute periods of extra-time. The energy
levels of the Black Tigers were just terrific as too their
opponents but neither side's defence could be breached again -
one all after the cessation of extra time - Joint Premiers - a
simply fantastic result for the Black Tigers.
To the U11 Panthers who were engaged against perennial rivals,
Manly. The U11A Grand Final followed the U11 Black Tigers game
and it took a while for the game to settle - the players had
been waiting beyond their start time and there was still the
aftermath of the excitement in the previous game. But settle
they soon did and after some anxious moments early on, the
Panthers started to control the midfield and the flow of the
game. This effort was rewarded with a well taken goal and the
Panthers carried this lead until half-time. Manly enjoyed a
period of concerted possession early in the second half -
however the Panthers weathered that storm and consolidated their
lead with a great team goal - started from deep in Ryde's half
and involving five unbroken passes. An outstanding passage of
play from an U11 team. This two goal buffer was held to the end
- a great result for the U11 Panthers.
Next in line - the U13 Black Tigers who, in strict dateline
terms, participated in the first grand final to be run (and won)
this weekend. Steve Dunn and Ben Craig's team were drawn against
GNS Blue and Steve had spent the whole week taking reports from
a myriad of hockey types warning him of the potency of the GNS
team. Steve's calm manner absorbed it all - despite being minor
premiers we were quite happy to be underdogs - and indeed we
proved to be mighty underdogs. Although there was only one goal
in it - beautifully engineered by Ollie Broomhall, and
wonderfully finished by Tess Bradford - this was a game that the
U13 Black Tigers absolutely deserved to win. Credit to the whole
team for what was a very hard working effort and particular
mention to Lachlan Forrest for a crucial save at a pivotal time
in the match. Another outstanding effort.
It was Ryde v GNS (take 2) in the U13A Grand Final. This game
was scheduled on Saturday morning and the home ground was just
bursting at the seams. The pattern of clashes between these
teams dictated that it would be tight and so it was. It was a
fantastic result and Ryde were forever on their toes due to the
speed of the GNS counter-attack. Great credit to Riley Keogh for
a simply outstanding front on save in this period. From the
opposite side of the ground the noise of the crowd was just
amazing and this ultimately lifted the Panthers. A steady stream
of possession led to some concerted pressure which was
wonderfully finished by Nick Edwards. This lead was held until
half-time and when the Panthers were awarded a short corner ten
minutes into the second half, they were confident of extending
their lead. However, a loss of possession drew the GNS
counter-attack into full view, GNS advanced the ball down field
with great speed and momentum and the Panthers were unable to
recover their formation - 1-1 and game absolutely on as they say
in the classics. Credit to the Panthers - they stuck to the game
plan and worked their opportunities that arose for them. A short
corner duly arrived and Adrian Rochester struck home a simply
wonderful conversion. It was a crucial goal and ultimately the
decisive one. A wonderful game and a great result for the U13
Panthers.
To the U15 Panthers who played Sutherland for the Colin Manning
Trophy on Friday evening. In previous reports the significance
of the Colin Manning Trophy to the Ryde club has been noted -
its significance remains undiminished and so inevitably the
stakes always seem higher. And then we were playing Sutherland -
higher times two. It was Sutherland who burst out of the blocks
and with three short corners in the first five minutes it could
be said they dominated early. Credit to Eugene Stroinovsky for
an outstanding save in this period. In what was a close,
combative match the possession never really flowed in the true
sense of the word but the Panthers at least weathered that storm
and enjoyed their best period prior to half time. We may have
wished that half-time had not occurred as Sutherland seized the
initiative and the lead shortly after the resumption. Curses!
And there was pacing to match on the western side of the ground.
It was a tense period as Sutherland pressed very hard for a
second goal. Again the Panthers held their nerve and clawed back
small tracks of possession. From such an opportunity Lachlan
Sharp found himself in the attacking circle and the Sutherland
defence made the error of thinking they had Lachie covered - one
startling strike later and Ryde was at 1-1 and the crowd just
roared. Extra-time was looming and duly came. In SJHA matches it
involves two periods; the first with nine players, the second
with seven players. There is also the added pressure of golden
goal. The first period was eventful but yielded no goal, the
second appeared headed in a similar vein but for a last minute
counter-attack from Ryde and a goal mouth scramble that resulted
in a penalty stroke. The siren sounded and so the stroke
occurred in that weird twilight time that follows the end of
regular extra time but where the match is still alive.
Considerable pressure for goalkeeper and penalty stroke taker
alike. Tom Craig stepped to the spot and converted amid great
scenes of celebration and glorious relief. After sharing the
title in 2007 this was the first time that the club has taken
this title in its own right. Simply wonderful. The official SJHA
Player for the Final awarded to Lachlan Sharp.
Thus six premierships in total thus far (amazing) and the U17
Tigers are still alive. Glebe/Briars may have won the U17B major
semi-final 2-1 last Friday night but there was not a great deal
in this match and it was very committed and engaged performance
by the Tigers who had provided great support to the Metro team
in the latter period of their match. Great club spirit Tigers
and a great match in your own right. The Tigers will face Manly
in next week's preliminary final. Please come along and support
this team.
There will be an opportunity for much deserved season
acknowledgements at our Presentation Evening but just in closing
thank you to a number of people who made the task of hosting
Grand Finals on the weekend possible - to David Goosakoff who
was Ground Marshall on Friday night, to Warren Green who
presided over ceremonies on Saturday morning, to Chris Campey
and David Moore who got our facilities ready on both Friday
night and Saturday morning, and to Gerald de Waal, Maurie Dawson
and a number of parents who helped out on the BBQ.
More details will follow on our Presentation evening where I
hope to be able to thank players and families and coaches and
managers more formally for a wonderful season. In the meantime
good luck to our U17 Tigers and to all players who are presently
engaged in representative trials.

Around the Grounds - Great U17A News - Support for Ryde teams
engaged in Finals Action Required
Dear Players and Families,
A great weekend and more to come.
We start with a result that was very significant for the club.
The U17 Panthers proceeded to their grand final last Friday
night knowing that this title had eluded the club since 1986.
For a while we thought that it may again be a bridge too far, or
that this knowledge may indeed be burdensome. Ten minutes into
the second half and the Panthers were trailing Moorebank 1-2 and
there was more than a little anxiety on the western grandstand
side of the field. But the resilience of this team was not to be
doubted. Every member addressed the task in front of them and
this was truly a team effort but with some outstanding pieces of
individual brilliance. The team simply refused to concede
another goal and in the process assumed control of the flow of
possession and the match. The equaliser came courtesy of a Ben
Craig drag flick that was goal bound from the moment it left
Ben's stick - such was the timing. With momentum building - and
with a crucial Chris Highman save in the intervening period -
the Panthers started a right side attack that left Nic McEwen
traversing a path across the top of the attacking circle but
heading left. The three Moorebank defenders who were in pursuit
thought that putting Nic on his reverse was the answer but a
beautifully struck tomahawk was the perfect reply - just
brilliant. Ditto the finish from Tom Craig when the result
needed to be confirmed and a clinical disposal of the ball was
required. At the end of the match the simple delight among the
team and the supporters told the story - this was a fantastic
result - congratulations to Jeff McEwen, Andy Wright, Geoff
Shields and the team.
Now to working through the age groups in chronological
order...and we start with the self-described surprise packets.
The U11 Black Tigers finished the regular season in 4th place
having amassed a North Area record of seven draws for the
season. They entered their preliminary final against Sydney
University as the underdogs but played with a passion and a
spirit that belied this tag. True, Sydney University did score
the first goal and looked reasonably comfortable in the first 12
minutes of the match. It was at this stage that the Black Tigers
pressed the go button. Two goals in five minutes (to David Buddo
and Lillian Starkey) saw the team enter half-time 2-1 up. The
second half saw some close and tense moments but the Black
Tigers were more than holding their own. With Matt Topfer's
advice 'make a wall, get the ball' ringing in their ears the
team did more than that and grabbed a third goal, courtesy of
Rebecca Liebson. Great effort Black Tigers and special mention
to Rory Lewis for an outstanding effort in goal.
The U15 teams had contrasting fortunes. The U15 Panthers booked
their place in the 15 Metro grand final with a 6-1 win over
Northern District. Three goals in the first ten minutes by the
Panthers set the tone for the match and despite Northern
District fighting back hard the Panthers did not relinquish
control of this game. To the next morning and the 15 Tigers were
keen to claim the right to face Briars in the Grand Final. The
only problem being that their opponents were of the same
mindset. The Tigers grabbed the first goal, courtesy of Linzie
Kruger but in a blink Manly had equalised and thereafter it was
Manly who were just that little bit better at taking their
opportunities. Otherwise the game was very even and Scott
Familton was mightily pleased with the performance of the team
on this day and of course throughout the season. The 15 Lions
entered their game with much enthusiasm and despite heading into
the half-time break one goal down illustrated this enthusiasm by
claiming the equaliser immediately after half time. The match
remained deadlocked for a considerable period - until the last
seven minutes when Northern District grabbed the crucial second
goal. As is often the way two goals followed in quick
succession. But heads up Lions this has been a great season on
your part.
Returning to the U17s and the U17 Tigers completed their round
matches with a 1-1 draw against Sutherland. Congratulations to
the Tigers who claimed second place and will now face
Glebe/Briars in the major semi-final.
The schedule of games is set down below - it is a very big
weekend of hockey - two grand finals and one semi-final on
Friday night and three grand finals on Saturday morning which is
the last morning of North Area hockey for the season and always
a celebration of the season (with BBQ!). Please come and support
a Ryde team on either Friday night or Saturday morning (or
indeed both). Wear black and white, bring streamers and
balloons, don face point - just do what you can....
Returning to more pedantic matters - all unclaimed lost property
will be going to a charity bin this Friday morning. If you are
missing something please come and check.
We will also be having something of a tidy up this Wednesday and
Thursday evening during training - just so the ground looks a
little 'spruced up' for the weekend festivities. There won't be
anything major - just picking up rubbish, seeing whether we can
break our record of collecting 88 plastic bottles in one circuit
of the ground, cleaning some windows, removing some layers of
dust, cleaning up the barbecue area, vacuuming the canteen
carpet. If you are around and can help - that would be great.

The Panther premiership pursuit
has commenced in triumph for our u17 Panthers. Our top Panther
'cub' side securing a 4-2 victory over Moorebank on Friday night
to take out the u17 Div 1 premiership...the first for Ryde in 23
years...Congratulations to all involved.
Four of our mens teams have booked a place in finals
action next week 7th, 6th, 4th & 3rd Grade. A number of those
teams having to win their last game to ensure their spot in a
closely contested race to the finals. The most notable of these,
4th grade who needed to defeat 3rd place Sutherland on Saturday
and did so with a breakaway goal in the last 30 seconds of the
game and 3rd grade who had to win their last 3 matches against
'top 4' contenders to cement their finals spot and did so in
style, without conceding a goal.
Two of our womens teams had a similar weekend with 2nd &
5th grade needing to win their games to advance to the
finals...both teams won and with 3rd grade assured of a finals
berth we have 3 out 6 teams into the finals. Our other teams
finished mid table or higher...a solid result overall for the
women this year showing good growth in our player talent and
excellent prospects for the future.
There are a few Panther 'cub' teams into grand finals as
well...
u11 Panthers
u11 Black Tigers
u13 Black Tigers
u13 Panthers
u15 Panthers
u17 Tigers (major semi)
So watch out for my next email with your weekend itinerary of
Panther hockey viewing.
Lastly and Most Importantly we will need some volunteers to man
the BBQ next Saturday running all day from early for junior
grand finals followed by 4 x mens semi's (including our 3rd &
4th grade) ...JUST 1 HOUR of your time would help out a lot!
Around the Grounds - Come and
Support a Ryde Team this Weekend
Dear Players and Families,
We have had one very exciting week of finals hockey and there is
more to come.
Friday night and arguably the biggest crowd of the weekend was
on hand to watch the U11 White Tigers play the U11 Black Tigers
in the U11B minor semi-final. There were mascots, grandparents,
aunts, uncles and plenty of good cheer. The White Tigers started
the match full of running and held the majority of possession in
the first ten minutes. The Black Tigers however held firm and
gradually started to make some incursions of their own. This
pressure ultimately had an impact and by half-time the Black
Tigers were two goals in front courtesy of some well-taken
chances in the circle. It is always hard to come from behind in
a final but credit to the White Tigers - led by Emily Thornton
and Kireth Sandhu they were very determined to claw back some
goals. On this day however the Black Tigers defence was
impregnable and they confirmed their victory with a late goal.
Great work by both teams and particular mention to Jillian
Rafferty, Rebecca Liebson and Eammon Marha who had fantastic
games for the Black Tigers. Still at Ryde and the U17 Tigers,
who are still involved in regular competition matches, held firm
against NWS to come away with a 2-2 draw. This was an important
result given the competition for semi-final spots. While this
contest was occurring the mighty U13 Black Tigers were engaged
in semi-final action against the imposing Baulkham Hills side.
The Black Tigers grabbed a goal early on, and then it was simply
a highly contested game with Baulkham Hills striving for the
equaliser and the Black Tigers being mightily resolute in
keeping them out. Amid many gasps and groans form the crowd it
was the score at the five minute mark that held firm until the
end – the Black Tigers proceeding to the Grand Final. From
Pennant Hills to Cintra and the U15 Panthers and Sutherland were
once again matched in a major semi-final. It is fair to say that
Sutherland took the honours in the first half and were reward
with a goal, ditto to Ryde in the second. The rules in Metro
provide for ‘drop-offs’ and golden goal in extra time – and at
1-1 at full-time that was the reality. The first period went by
with no addition to the score, and the second was proceeding in
a similar vein until Sutherland seized a half-chance with 1
minute and 46 seconds on the clock. Always tough when such
things happen but still much to take from this match, most
notably a very combative second-half performance.
Saturday morning dawned seemingly not long after Friday night
had finished and it was the U11 Panthers on centre stage at
Ryde. It was a very fast match and the deadlock was not broken
until the 18 minute mark when Dylan Lavery seized a half chance
and drove the ball home. The match though had the feel of one
where there were a few episodes still to come. And so it was.
Manly had a period of sustained possession early in the second
half and were duly reward with a goal. If anything the intensity
increased as too the volume from the grandstand. Both sides had
some half-chances before Georgia Carlaw finished off a great
Panthers movement with the cleanest and most clinical of
finishes. Well done U11 Panthers – straight through to the Grand
Final. From Ryde to Cintra where the U15 Lions were drawn
against perennial rivals Briars in a minor semi-final. Briars
had enjoyed success in the most recent encounter and were hoping
to repeat that result. But they had not countered on a sparkling
performance from the Lions who crisply slotted three goals and
only conceded one. The mighty Lions live to fight another day!
The Ryde support crew then moved to Pennant Hills, seemingly
always the home of a tense encounter. The U13 Panthers v GNS
match matched the bill. With seven minutes to go the Panthers
held a 1-0 lead against a fired-up GNS side who refused to
concede a centimetre of turf. As you probably guessed GNS
grabbed the equaliser and we thus had twenty minutes of extra
time (no drop-offs, or golden goal in NA finals). The tension
index was high but the result didn’t alter – the 13 Panthers go
through on account of being Minor Premiers. Pheeeeeeeeeeeeew!
All concerned were a little drained after that match but not the
U15 Tigers’ opponents Briars who came bursting out of the
blocks. Briars claimed the ascendancy early and peskily declined
to let it go, despite the determination of the Tigers to get
back into the match. One of the benefits of finishing in the top
two however is that you get a second bite and so it will be for
the 15 Tigers.
The schedule of matches for the weekend is set down below.
Please come and support a Ryde team. It means a great deal to
the players. A particular mention to the U17 Panthers whose
Grand Final is this weekend – 8.20pm at Cintra – our best wishes
go to Jeff McEwen and his team. This U17 Grand Final will be
preceded by the U15 Metro preliminary final – thus two Ryde
matches at the one venue on Friday night.

Around the Grounds, Date of
Junior Presentation Evening, Semi-Finals Fast Approaching
Dear Players and Families,
Cold mornings and evenings but great days characterised the
weather on the weekend. And there was fantastic hockey to match.
On Friday night the warmest venue was at Ryde, particularly
under the heaters.
The U11 Panthers provided a great start to the evening with a
very composed display. In what was a very good game of U11
hockey it was arguably the Panthers’ best performance of the
season against second-placed Manly. Three very well-taken goals
by Xanthe Gregory, Dylan Lavery and Lachlan McKay. After a U11
derby last week it was the turn of the U13 Tigers teams to do
more of the same. The U13 White Tigers started the match on fire
and threw almost everything at the U13 Black Tigers. Some very
good work in this period by Harrison Starkey, Sinead McCraith
and Gaurav Gholkar. After withstanding this onslaught the Black
Tigers created some of their own momentum which was complimented
by some great finishing in the circle. Good work here by a hard
working Black Tigers midfield, particularly Joseph Gough and
Grace Craig while Tess Bradford’s pace was a constant threat to
the White Tigers’ defence. Having reluctantly left the warmth of
the dressing room the U15 Panthers entertained us all with the
quality of their hockey. Coaches John Cullen and Scott Morrison
stressed ball movement and their instructions were followed.
There were nine individual goal scorers and what was evident to
the spectators was the great harmony across the team.
In a somewhat colder climate the U13 Panthers took on
second-placed Gordon at KHC. From all accounts the Panthers
played some fantastic hockey in the first half to take a 3-0
lead. Possession and opportunities were more evenly shared in
the second half but the Panthers took the game and the minor
premiership with a 4-1 win. Congratulations to Amanda Wilson,
Suzannah Baartz and their team. Over at Briars the U17 Tigers
were playing ladder leaders Glebe/Briars. While the Tigers went
down 1-3 Coaches Michael English and David Moore took a lot from
the performance noting the vastly improved defensive performance
from the team’s last meeting.
Friday night had hardly finished when we were back at Ryde on
Saturday morning for a round of matches. The U11 White Tigers
commenced proceedings and despite going down 0-1 to ladder
leaders it was a fantastic performance from the marauding White
Tigers. Natasha Ploskodniak and Sion Hack were outstanding in
defence and what warmed the hearts of the White Tigers
supporters was the persistence demonstrated by the team. They
simply repelled wave after wave of attack from an older and more
physically mature side. Great Work White Tigers. The U11 Black
Tigers were the next Ryde team on the pitch and they were keen
to confirm their semi-final berth. Some very pleasing signs for
the Black Tigers including some increased goal-scoring prowess –
an important factor in breaking the penchant for draws. The U15
Lions followed and although your correspondent was elsewhere I
hear that it was a very tight game with only a goal in it –
unfortunately to the Lions’ opponents Baulkham Hills. The last
game of the round featured the U15 Tigers who assisted by some
very enthusiastic U13 volunteers in Adrian Rochester, Morgan
Blamey, Gaurav Gholkar and Nick Green overcame a persistent
Northern District side 3-0.
The schedule of matches appears below. Please note that the U11
Black and U11 White Tigers in addition to the U13 Panthers have
a weekend free this weekend prior to their semi-finals. The
semi-finals are nearly upon us:
- U17A semi-finals start this weekend (precise time TBA). Good
luck to the U17 Panthers who are engaged in the semi-finals this
Friday night at Cintra. If you have a chance go out and support
Jeff McEwen and his team.
- SJHA U15 Metro and North Area semi-finals commence the weekend
20-21 August. Some teams completed their round matches this
weekend past and have a weekend’s rest prior to their semi-final
- U17 B semi-finals do not commence until 3 September
In all of the finals series in which Ryde junior teams are
engaged, the semi-finals will follow a 1 v 2, 3 v 4 format. The
winner of 1 v 2 proceeds to the grand final. The loser of 1 v 2
and the winner of 3 v 4 play in a preliminary final for the
right to play in the grand final. There are different rules
across the various competitions regarding the length of
extra-time should there be a draw – but rest assured your
coaches and managers are aware of their relevant rules. In North
Area competition matches if there is a draw at the conclusion of
normal time, a period of extra time will be played. If at the
conclusion of extra time the scores are still level the higher
placed team will proceed. If the match is a Grand Final there
will be Joint Premiers. Please note that extra time is played
out in North Are matches – it is not golden goal. The rules in
U15 Metro matches about extra time involve ‘drop offs and
‘golden goal’. In U17 matches extra time permits golden goals
but does not include drop offs.
Note the weekend’s results are normally up on by COB Tuesday.
A date to keep in your diary – Junior Presentation Evening
Friday 14 September 2010 – More details to follow.
Please do not forget your nomination for representative trials.
And good luck to our Minkey players who are engaged in their

A weekend of ‘just hockey’ has passed with a number of fine
performances evident.
Working through the age groups and we start with the U11
Panthers who provided a polished performance in claiming a 3-0
victory over GNS. Coach Matt McKay was particularly impressed by
the games of Matthew Dunn and Xanthe Gregory in addition to the
ball movement evident in the game. Well done U11 Panthers. Still
in the U11 ranks and it was the local derby that everyone looks
forward to – the U11 Black Tigers v the U11 White Tigers. Club
President, Maurie Dawson, enjoyed the game and the sheer
endeavour of both teams - there was plenty of desperation on
show. Ultimately there was only one goal in it – scored by the
Black Tigers’ Jacob Curcio.
Moving to the U13s where the U13 Panthers were matched against a
plucky Briars side. Briars were down in numbers and then
suffered a further loss in players due to some injuries. The
coaches agreed to declare the result and the second half saw the
sides evened up so that everyone got some hockey in. The U13
Black Tigers enjoyed a spirited game against Kings Langley - at
3-1 up the Black Tigers looked comfortable but Kings Langley
started to use the long ball to advantage and claimed the next
four goals in quick succession. Lots to take from the game
however for the Black Tigers including some sparkling play up
front by Ollie Broomhall and a tremendous defensive effort from
David Tocknell. Next to take the field were the U13 White Tigers
who ran into an aggressive and persistent Northern District
side. It was one of those days where the bounce of the ball
didn’t fall the way of the White Tigers – but this team has
bounced back before this season and will do so again.
Turning to the U15s and the Panthers had the 7.45am start
against Sydney University. There may be something to be said for
the literature that suggests that players at this age group
struggle with the early timeslots. The Panthers struggled to
maintain fluency and they were eagerly matched by a Sydney
University side that were adept at breaking the play own.
Eventually however a weight of possession told and the Panthers
emerged with a five goal victory. To the U15 Tigers who were
engaged against ladder leaders Manly (apologies to the 15 Tigers
who were omitted from last week’s report – you did not survive
the process form MWord to email – my fault entirely but I’m
blaming Vista!). Coach Scott Familton reports that the teams had
previously met twice this year and on both occasions it was
Manly that came away with the spoils. The Tigers resolved not to
allow that to happen again. For the first 10 minutes however it
looked like a case of déjà vu as Manly applied all the pressure.
The Ryde defence held solid and some great saves by keeper
Eugene Stroinovsky were important to keeping the scoreline at
0-0. The tide though started to turn through some blistering
runs down the right wing by Tim Taylor who was finally rewarded
with a goal from a short corner. The second half continued at
the same frantic pace with Ryde's half and back line repelling
everything that Manly threw at them and Brittany Morrison
upsetting every ball that came out of Manly’s defence.
Eventually something had to give and it was Ryde that secured
the critical second goal through Kirstyn Button to close the
game out 2-0. A fantastic team effort and a result well
deserved. Rounding out the U15s and the Lions were engaged at
Cintra against Briars. These sides have had a number of close
battles this year but it was the turn of Briars, on this
occasion, to take the spoils 3-1.
The U17 Tigers had a bye this weekend so our U17 report is
confined to the Panthers. Surely this was one of the more
extraordinary matches of the year – down 0-3 to Sutherland after
ten minutes the Panthers piled on a cool ten goals to take the
match and the minor premiership 10-5. Six goals to Nic McEwen,
three to Jack Hayes and one to Tom Wilson. Congratulations U17
Panthers!
In representative news – our very warm congratulations to Ben
Campey, Adrian Rochester and Lachlan Sharp who were named in the
NSW U13 side last Sunday.
In wider representative news please don’t forget to forward your
nominations for 2010/2011 representative trials.
The dates for the indoor hockey season have also been released –
a separate email will go out this week.

Around the Grounds
Dear Players and Families,
A wonderful weekend for the Club with the hosting of the third
NAJHA U9 carnival.
There was simply a fantastic turn out of volunteer assistance.
Georgia Dwyer, Paul Dobbie, Gregg Merchan, Mark Richards and
Chris Whittaker ran the two Ryde U9 teams on the day. Ollie
Broomhall, Matthew Calleja, Alex Cook, Ben Campey, Alexandra
Morrison, Scott Morrison, Adrian Rochester. Martin Rochester,
James Stephens, Beth Westmore and Nicholas Williams all umpired
matches. Michelle Golds and Sharon Rochester cooked the best
bacon and egg rolls you could ever hope to buy, while Allison
Bellingham kept Warren Green and Bernard Moore under control in
the canteen. Chris Campey, Charles Calleja, Gerald de Waal,
Stephanie Dwyer, Gregg Dwyer, Dave Goosakoff and Jeff McEwen
were part of a myriad of jobs while all volunteers contributed
to the construction/deconstruction of the modified fields. Janet
Arnold took some great photos while as ever Maurie Dawson was
the bastion of goodwill and patience. While on the score of
‘thank yous’ – a note of thanks to Amauri Amat and Scott
Familton who helped with U15 and U17 umpiring this weekend –
efforts above and beyond.
There were ten teams and 86 U9 players in attendance. Twenty
matches were played across four fields in the two hour period.
There was a lot of fun and enthusiasm on show, a feeling of
organised chaos, but it was all good for hockey.
To the rest of the weekend starting with Friday night. At the
Panthers Den the U11 Black Tigers started the evening in gritty
style with a 1-1 draw against ladder leaders Sydney University.
The Black Tigers are a team that likes to keep the scoreline
tight, this being their sixth draw of the season. The team’s
defence particularly in the last ten minutes was very uplifting
with David Buddo outstanding in goal and Nicholas Topfer a
veritable rock of Gibraltar in the centre. The U13 Panthers were
clearly in a hurry and were three goals up after 15 minutes
courtesy of some fine attacking incision from Ben Campey. To
Northern District’s great credit they came roaring back and
claimed two goals prior to half-time. The second half was the
complete opposite to the first with the game assuming a
defensive hue. The play rebounded between the circles as Ryde
sought to hold their lead and Northern District claim the
equaliser. A fantastic save by Riley Keogh from a searing shot
was ultimately decisive and the Panthers held their advantage
until the final siren. The U15 Panthers followed and clicked
into gear from the outset. There was vibrancy to their play and
despite some dogged defence from Northern District the Panthers
used the width of the field and the movement of the ball to
great effect.
Over at Pennant Hills both the U11 Panthers and U17 Panthers
were in action. The U11 Panthers bounced back from their holiday
break and various excursions to Tamworth for some team members
with a 4-1 win. As ever Coach Matt McKay was pleased with the
effort of his team. An under staffed U17 Panthers team were
drawn against the highly fancied NWS 1 side. Coach Jeff McEwen
was simply rapt with the 5-5 draw given the impact of injury and
illness on the team.
Given the U9 Carnival at Ryde your around the grounds
correspondent has been a little lax in gathering reports from
matches played on Saturday. What is known however is that the
U13 White Tigers played out a very combative 0-0 draw against
the second-placed GNS Blue. The U15 Lions were pitted against
ladder leaders Sydney University and were mightily determined,
an effort not quite captured by the 0-3 scoreline. And finally
the U17 Tigers endured the 8.00am start at Sutherland and played
some very good hockey in taking the honours 3-1.
Schedule of Matches – 30/31 July

Indoor Training Camps
Ozsports are running indoor hockey training sessions leading up
to the season start for those juniors wanting to sharpen their
indoor skills and get the edge over the competition.
This Saturday, 24 July, Ryde is hosting the third North Area U9
carnival. The carnival is scheduled to run 9.00am – 11.00am.
The carnival is a busy affair as there are four games in
progress at any one time (across the field). We are anticipating
80 U9 players and their families.
We will need assistance in setting up the field – boards are
used to separate each of four playing fields – assistance in the
canteen, assistance in running the teams and assistance in
umpiring the games. Umpires do not need to be badged – if you
simply have a love of the game and you can apply broadly the
attached rules – you will
be great.
Even if you can just spare an hour – or be there simply at
8.30am, or 11.00am to help construct/deconstruct the fields –
that would be fantastic.
Around the Grounds, Turf
Opening, Schedule of Matches
Dear Players and Families,
Thank you to all families who attended the opening of our new
turf last Saturday. I appreciate that it was a busy weekend
being at the end of school holidays and with many U11 families
in Tamworth for the York Cup and Kim Small Shield.
Photos will shortly appear on the website to illustrate the
colour of the day.
A few acknowledgements are in order – to Alex Krensel who
organised the working bee the weekend before, an effort that
contributed greatly to the venue looking ’loved’. Thanks as well
to the de Waal, Dwyer, Green, Keogh, McEwen, Morrison, Pearce
and Welsman families for their attendance on that day.
To the day itself - to Tom Craig for a wonderfully warm
capturing of junior hockey at Ryde, to Sinead McCraith and Nick
Williams for their part in the presentation, to our enthusiastic
ball girls/ball boys, Morgan Blamey, Riley Keogh, Tegan Lindsay,
Sinead McCraith, Sophie Parkes, and to our youngest members who
accompanied First Grade onto the ground, Sally Burgess, Jay
Campbell, Ellen Campey, Beth Dobbie, Tom Dobbie, Thomas English,
Kate Kennedy, Darcy Keogh, Tilly Keogh, Kayl Lindsay, Jordan
McPherson, Zachary McPherson, Joel Merchant and Aimee Topfer, a
significant thank you.
A particular mention to First Grade who entered into the spirit
of the ‘walk on’ with great enthusiasm, to Georgia Dwyer for
coordinating the Minkey participation, and to Warren Green and
Dave Goosakoff who were there early on Saturday when I was a
little unsure that everything would be ready (with a temperament
to match!). And if you excuse the indulgence, thank you to
Bernard, David and Declan for enduring the issues of temperament
and doing a zillion jobs in preparation.
Only one match to report this week – and it was a good one with
the U17 Tigers recording a 4-3 win over NWS 2. After some shaky
defensive moments in the first half, from both teams, it was the
U17 Tigers who marshalled their defence to better effect in the
second half. A fast-moving match however which kept the hardy
group of supporters. on a bitterly cold night at Pennant Hills.
well entertained.
In representative news congratulations to Ben Campey, Varun
George and Adrian Rochester who have all been named in the NSW
U13 Boys squad. We wish Ben, Varun and Adrian all the best for
the ensuing camp prior to the naming of the U13 team.
The schedule of matches for next week is set out below – just a
reminder that training resumes this week. Minkey resumes also
this week. Please note that the third North Area U9 carnival
will take place this Saturday at Ryde. A separate email will be
sent regarding the assistance we need to run this event.

Around the Grounds 2-3 July
Dear Players and Families,
Apologies for the delay in the report this week.
Returning to last weekend and the heaters were put to good use
at Ryde on Friday evening. We all needed some entertainment to
take our minds off the cold and it was duly provided. The U11
Panthers and Manly provided a very tight contest that was
ultimately decided by a goal, courtesy of Ryde’s Lachlan Mckay.
Xanthe Gregory ensured that this lead was held with a number of
crucial saves; one in particular brought the house down. More
determination was on show in the next game as the U13 White
Tigers were engaged in an important match against GNS White.
Understandably there were some evident nerves and the goal
didn’t come easily. What was impressive however was the manner
in which the U13 White Tigers simply gritted their collective
teeth and by sheer weight of possession and persistence grabbed
the all important goal. Credit to the whole team. A more free
flowing game followed with the U17 Panthers opposed to the
Gordon/Sydney University team. While possession was fairly
evenly shared it was Ryde who accelerated at the crucial
moments.
Still on Friday night but this time over at Cintra where the U17
Tigers were in action. It was a frustrating match given that the
Tigers secured the majority of opportunities only for their
opponents, Manly, to counter–attack with two crucial goals.
There were no heaters in evidence at Kuring-gai where the U15
Panthers took on GNS. As is always the case GNS came out
fired-up and firing; up to the point where the score stood at
3-3 it was GNS who always held a one goal advantage. The
Panthers then reversed the order of things by taking a two goal
lead, courtesy of some Tom Craig magic. GNS reduced the lead to
one to make for a very exciting finish but the Panthers held
their nerve to take out the match 5-4.
Saturday morning - a glorious day - and the U13 Black Tigers
matched the mood of the day with an important win over Kings
Langley. Two goals in the first half was enough to secure
victory but the Black Tigers were asked to work very hard
against some very incisive attacking players in the Kings
Langley team. Well done Black Tigers! In a similar vein the U15
Tigers showed a lot of grit in their 2-1 victory. Faced with
being a goal down ten minutes into the second half it was the
Tigers who finished strongly courtesy of some hard work from
Alycia Robertson and some bustling efforts on the forward line
by Brittany Morrison. Next on board were the U15 Lions who once
again captured our hearts with their effort. Against ladder
leaders Northern District White the Lions claimed 2-2 draw, the
highlight of which was the last ten minutes where the Lions
repelled wave after wave of ND attack.
Over at Briars the U11 While Tigers were taking on the
well-performed Briars steam. It was the White Tigers who took
the lead through Kayl Lindsay, one they held until the last ten
minutes when Briars made the most of the chances and grabbed two
goals. Thanks to those players who helped the White Tigers out
and particular mention to Emily Thorton, Kireth Sandhu and
Catherine McCartney for their work in defence, and to Sara Scott
for the level of her involvement.
Just a reminder that there is no junior hockey this week. Watch
this space however for important emails about our field opening
and working bee.
U17 hockey resumes Friday 16 July and all other junior hockey
the weekend of 23/24 July.
Minkey resumes 22 July and we have a Minkey carnival on 24 July.
Good luck to those girls who are participating the U13
Half-State Championships this weekend (Newcastle) and to all our
U11 players who are travelling to Tamworth the weekend following
for the York Cup and Kim Small Shield.

Dear Players and Families,
What a weekend and what a Family Day.
A few thank you notes are in order.
To all of the families who attended.
To Chris Campey and Alex Krensel for work in the preceding week
to ensure that rubbish was removed plus a myriad of other
measures that contributed to less mayhem on Saturday.
To Dave Goosakoff for organising all of the supplies on the day,
including the jumping castle, and for being a great source of
good deeds.
To Alex Braude and co for great support to all of the junior
teams that participated on the morning, and to Jess and Ellie
Cullen for matters face painting.
To Lisa McKay, Chris Whittaker, Kailey Whittaker and Ron Lavery
for the decorations and early morning barista support when the
need for caffeine was strong among the assembled throng.
To Alison Bellingham, Louise Green, Emily Forest, Oonagh Kelsey,
Ai Ling Han, Jackie Lindsay and Bernard Moore who simply did
great things in the canteen.
To Anna Buddo, Jackie Lindsay, Gill McCartney and Warren Green
for monumental work and long sessions on the BBQ.
To all the Ryde teams who participated so willingly in the
tug-o-wars, and to Ellen Campey, David Buddo, Rebecca Liebson,
Rory Lewis, Camille Liebson, Ollie Broomhall, Isabelle Stephens
and Sion Freed for participating so brilliantly in the relay.
To Ivan Boulton and his Ozsports team for generously supporting
the day with prizes.
To the hockey and we will start with Friday night at Ryde.
The U11 White Tigers commenced proceedings where try as they
might they could find the back of the net. The White Tigers
defended very well and held the great majority of possession but
a gritty ND defence and some great saves from the ND goalkeeper
kept the scoreline to 0-0. The U13 White Tigers followed and
provided a very spirited display against Briars. Two goals, very
well compiled, in each half were the result of some well
constructed passages of play. Pleasing as well was the attention
to defence and restricting Briars to one goal. While all the
team contributed you could not help but notice the efforts of
Morgan Blamey who just had a fantastic game. The U17 Panthers
were in good spirits when they took the field and their spirits
were further improved by a thirteen goal performance. Multiple
goal scorers were in evidence as the team sought to use the full
width of the field and a number of attacking options.
Friday night was indeed busy and teams were engaged at
Kuring-gai and Kyeemagh. First to Kuring-gai and the U13
Panthers were engaged in a top-of-the-table clash with 2009
Premiers GNS. It is likely that matches between these teams will
be highly contested through the season and this was no
exception. It was the Panthers who prevailed on this occasion
courtesy of a 3-2 win – details are scant at this stage but the
clearest report that I have received thus far was that coach
Amanda Wilson was happy with the team! The U15 Tigers followed.
The first 10 minutes of the game was tight with the play ranging
up and down the field and chances on offer for both sides. But
Ryde held strong and then found a new gear through Callum Edsor,
opening the scoring with two goals within five minutes. After
half time the Ryde midfield continued to work well with solid
performances from Linzie Kruger, Kirstyn Button and Alycia
Robertson and a goal to Nick Green. But in the final 10 minutes
it was the two Ryde full backs that had the final say with a
goal each to Adrian Rochester and Chris Moscato to seal a solid
5-0 victory (thanks to Scott Familton for the report).
Meanwhile at the airport the U15 Panthers were opposed to Glebe.
With the coaching brains trust in Bathurst and Orange Richard
Sharp kindly took the reins (thanks Richard). Fourteen goals
later and I guess we say that Richard is one from one. Five
goals to Lachlan Sharp and four goals to Sion Freed – clearly
some great work on the forward line, but also good supply from
the back and through the midfield.
Amid the celebrations of Family Day there were three Ryde teams
engaged at Ryde. The U11 Panthers were opposed to GNS; the
latter having taken the honours when the sides last met at KHC.
The Panthers were in a very determined frame of mind. There was
a very contested battle in midfield and gradually and ever so
slightly the Panthers gained the ascendancy. The goals duly
followed – three in fact – and all reflecting a shift in
possession in Ryde’s favour. Determination was also a feature of
the play of the U13 Black Tigers. The first fifteen minutes of
the match against GNS White was very tight with each side trying
to garner the momentum with an early goal. The work of David
Tocknell in repelling many a GNS raid was telling. It was not
the sort of game where you thought there would be a five goal
difference but that is what eventuated – courtesy of some very
good finishing by the Black Tigers forward line. The U15 Lions
and GNS White then put on arguably the most entertaining match
of the day. Down 0-2 and 1-3 early the Lions showed a great deal
of resilience. Once they drew level they were just determined
that they would not be headed – the 7-4 scoreline was a great
credit to the whole team but particular mention to Moran Knight
whose carry of the ball was just fantastic (a correction to the
U15 Lions report for last week as well – it was Chris McCartney
who claimed the hatrick).
The U17 Tigers had a tough day at the office – after a long
break they ran into a Glebe/Briars team who were clearly ready
to play and who were not perturbed by the 8.00am start. And
let’s not forget the U11 Black Tigers who took on Briars at
Cintra – again another close match with this opponent – Briars
took a one goal lead early and the Black Tigers could not pull
it back this time. A lot to admire though in the endeavour with
which the Black Tigers pursued the equaliser.
In representative news congratulations to Tom Craig and Jack
Hayes for making the U16 NSW All Schools team that will compete
in the School Sport Australia Boys U16 years Hockey
Championships, Bunbury WA, 14-21 August 2010.
Good luck to all who are heading off to PSSSA (Boys) in Bathurst
and the U13 Boys Half State Championships in Lismore. Safe
travelling.
With a number of families away this week please be sure to
advise your team manager of your availability for your match
this week.
After this week’s matches we then encounter a break for the
school holidays although the size of this break differs across
the competitions.

2010, Schedule of Matches, Don't Forget Family Day!
Dear Players and Families,
We start this week’s report with our fantastic Minkey members
who participated in their second monthly carnival on Saturday at
Pennant Hills. I understand that a good time was had by all with
plenty of running on show and with a particular taste for goal
scoring in evidence. Thanks to Stephen Macmillan who coordinated
the Ryde efforts on the day, and to Stephanie Dwyer and Bernard
Moore who lent a hand. Particular thanks to Alex Cook from our
Men’s 1st Grade team who did a great job mentoring young players
and umpires all morning. This is not to forget the score of
parents who encouraged the efforts of all of the participants
and contributed to the success of the day.
Returning to Friday night and thanks to Chris Campey for his
work as Ground Marshall amid a sea of small inconveniencies on
the evening. Thanks to Alison Bellingham as well, for the
required mercy dash for much needed supplies.
To the hockey and the U11 Black Tigers put in a mighty effort
against ladder leaders Sydney University. With Meghan Bowden
outstanding in defence the Black Tigers held Sydney University
to one goal and were pushing for the equaliser right to the end
courtesy of a mighty effort from David Buddo. Even though you
didn’t take the points great work Black Tigers. The U13 Panthers
followed and were keen to show their prowess. Hat tricks by Ben
Campey and Iwan Freed capped off a fine team effort that netted
ten goals in total. The U15 Tigers consolidated their position
in the top two with a well-constructed 4-0 victory over Northern
District. Coach Scott Familton underlined the victory by noting
that the team played well and enjoyed themselves – what more
could you want!
Still on Friday night and the U11 Ryde Panthers were opposed to
Northern District who always present as very formidable
opponents particularly at Pennant Hills. And so it was. The 2-2
scoreline showed the evenness of the match with Coach Matt McKay
noting the good play of both teams and the standard of the game
in general. Meanwhile at Kyeemagh the U15 Panthers were engaged
in a top the table clash with Sutherland Blue. After a scoreless
first half it was the team from the Shire that took the lead.
This set the scene for a battle of wills with the Panthers
looking to wrestle possession and control of the play from their
opponents. Some points in the match were crucial at this time. A
great save by keeper Eugene Stroinovsky and a telling top of the
circle tackle from Joseph ‘Fish’ Radburn were key to the
Panthers steadying the ship. In what became an arm wrestle it
was the Panthers who prevailed 2-1 – (but just). The first goal
was courtesy of some great positioning and intelligent goal
sense by Georgia Dwyer who followed up the rebound from the
keeper’s pads, the second a piece of classy persistence by Lily
Brazel.
Saturday morning and there was a definite chill in the air – we
were pleased for the 8.00am rather than the 7.45am start. The
U11 White Tigers were always in the ascendancy in their match
against Northern District and strung together some very
team-oriented passages of play. As the 1-0 scoreline attests
Northern District proved to be very resilient in the circle
although there were two posters that denied the White Tigers
more breathing space. As it turned out,= the fine strike by Kayl
Lindsay proved to be decisive. The U13 White Tigers were keen to
follow and were unlucky to go to the half-time break at 0-0
given that they had held the majority of possession. The tide
turned in the second half, however, with the White Tigers
becoming more confident as they grabbed the first goal – four
goals to Tegan Lindsay but some great work in the midfield by
Sienna Grippi and at the back Harrison Starkey was also
instrumental to a fine team performance. A similar game followed
between the U15 Lions and Baulkham Hills. Fifty minutes of the
game passed with not a goal scored before the Lions broke the
deadlock. Phew we all thought only for Baulkham Hills to
equalise within ninety seconds. However the Lions were
determined to take control and added three more goals in quick
succession. Matthew Forti’s hat-trick caught the eye but Ciara
Crimmins’ composure on the ball was crucial during the middle
part of this match while Chris McCartney and Damon Gordon’s work
rate was fantastic. The weekend would not be complete without
the U13 Black Tigers who continued their penchant for goal
scoring with a 7-0 victory at Briars. Coach Steve Dunn continues
to emphasise the passing game and this combined with fleet of
wing-footed strikers is getting the results.
Schedule of Matches
The schedule of matches for this coming weekend is set down
below. Two matches, involving the U11 Black Tigers and the U11
White Tigers, are still to be announced. This will be resolved
following tomorrow night’s meeting of the NAJHA which will
finalise the splitting of the U11B pool. As soon as these
details are known I will confirm the draw for these two teams.
In a similar vein once the U13B pool is split (following Round
11) the NAJHA will be in a position to finalise the remaining
draw for all pools.
Family Day
Please support Ryde- Gordon North Sydney Family Day this
forthcoming Saturday 26 June. Each junior match on Saturday
morning will be followed by a tug-o-war (with prizes). There
will be a BBQ, face painting, and a jumping castle (the latter
provided it is dry). Premier League matches between Ryde and GNS
will take place at 12.30 (1st grade) and 2.00pm (2nd Grade). A
junior relay will take place at half-time in First Grade
involving a boy and girl from each club in the U9, U11, U13 and
U15 age groups. At this week’s training sessions coaches will be
looking to select participants for this relay. They will be
checking to see whether likely participants will be available at
1.00pm on Saturday.
While appreciating that all families are busy we will be needing
volunteers to staff the BBQ from 7.45am to 12 Noon – if you have
an hour to spare we would be most grateful.
In representative news our best wishes to all members who will
be participating in the U18 Girls State Championships this
forthcoming weekend in Orange. Trust all in attendance have
their winter clothes to the ready.

Around the Grounds 4-5 June
2010
We thought it was wet the previous weekend but it was a mere
shower compared to the weather we experienced on Friday.
The U11 Panthers and U13 Panthers did not play – not because of
the ground – but simply because road closures and accidents on
the northern beaches presented Manly with a number of
difficulties in getting to the ground. The pitch held up
magnificently but particular thanks are due to Chris Campey,
Dave Goosakoff, Warren and Louise Green, and David Moore who all
became drainage experts on Friday to ensure that the significant
amount of surrounding ground water escaped via the preferred
route.
We will reschedule the U11 and U13 Panthers games.
Thus on Friday night at Ryde there was only one game – clearly
an unusual circumstance but the crowd nevertheless entered into
the spirit of the occasion and were warmed by the occasional pie
and refreshment or two. The U15 Panthers completed the task at
hand with a 6-0 win over Sutherland Black. The passing by the
team, particularly in the first half, was pleasing to all in
attendance, as too the score sheet which registered six
different goal scorers. It was something of a Ryde –Sutherland
evening because over at Cintra both U17 teams were engaged
against teams from the Shire. The U17 Tigers were first on the
program and extended their good form with a 4-0 win. Nick
Wakeling with a hat-trick was clearly impressive but the
enthusiastic work of Matthew Fung in the circle also caught the
eye – in particular three shots that hit the post! The U17
Panthers followed and were impressive in their 5-3 defeat of a
full-strength Sutherland team. This was high quality hockey
featuring many highly credentialed players; the Panthers took
the ascendancy early by claiming a 3-1 half-time lead and held
their composure in the second half.
Saturday morning and the weather had turned – there was sunshine
in evidence but also a bite in the air. The first game on the
program at Ryde, featuring the U11 Black Tigers and Briars, was
just a fantastic game. It is probably fair to say that Briars
held the ascendancy for most of the match but the combination of
a very resilient Black Tigers team and a fantastic effort in
goal by Jade Beeston (featuring four standout saves) saw the
Black Tigers only down a goal with three minutes to go. What
happened then I hear you ask – well a counter attack featuring a
number of passes with Lachlan Giulieri in space on the half way
line running on a 45 degree angle to goal and with seemingly the
whole Briars team in hot pursuit – Lachlan carried the ball
beautifully and matched the finish to the run – it was the most
widely applauded equaliser of the season thus far! The U11 White
Tigers also had formidable opponents in ladder leaders Sydney
University. On this particular day Sydney University were just
too strong, notwithstanding some very hard working White Tigers,
but the White Tigers will bounce back. The third match of the
day featured both U13 Tigers teams – thus there was a good crowd
in attendance all cheering for Ryde. The match had only
travelled ten minutes and already the score stood at 1-1 so
clearly there was no shortage of entertainment or ball movement.
Gradually the Black Tigers took the ascendancy although the game
was closer than the 4-1 scoreline would suggest. Credit to both
teams for the spirit in which they played game, wonderfully
facilitated by their respective coaches and managers. The U15
Tigers closed out proceedings at Ryde with a typically
hard-fought tussle against traditional rivals Manly. The Tigers
had the ascendancy in the first half and their 1-0 lead did not
match their efforts of the first half. A sleepy five minute
period at the start of the second half then proved costly with
Manly putting two goals on in short order. Try as they might the
Tigers could not grab the equaliser – the hunger remains though
in the 15 Tigers and they are already looking forward to the
next clash. One match to go and it was great to see the U15
Lions bounce back to form with a 2-0 won over Briars at Cintra.
Ciara Crimmins and Chris McCartney contributed the goals but
great work was evident across the park - it was worth the price
of admission to see the smile back on Phil ‘Wally’ Welsman’s
face.
There is a break from hockey for the long weekend this week.
Safe travelling to those who are going away. Good luck to those
girls who are participating in the Canberra Carnival and also to
those players who are participating in PSSA and CHS carnivals
this week.
Unless otherwise advised by your team manger training is still
ON.
Just a date to keep in your diaries - Saturday 26 June has been
designated Ryde – GNS Family Day at Ryde. We generally try to
have Ryde – GNS matches right throughout the day (juniors and
seniors), together with tug-o-wars after each junior match, and
junior relays at half time in first grade. There will be the
requisite jumping castle and BBQ!
Please
see attached, an invitation
for junior players to participate in a Hook in2 Hockey
Superclinic over the AHL weekend. All participants receive a
free ticket to the Sunday session of the AHL!
NB:#
Registrations for the AHL H2H Super clinic close on 16 June.

Around the Grounds Report 28-29
May
Last weekend in May and the rain came (and how at some venues).
The U11 Black Tigers got us underway at Ryde and were soon into
their stride. Possession was evenly matched in the first twenty
minutes prior to Ryde enjoying a period of ascendancy either
side of half time which resulted in two goals. The match though
had the feel of being far from resolved and when the King
Langley keeper made a series of fine saves this spurred his team
into action. One goal was pulled back and Ryde looked to have
withstood the onslaught having endured four consecutive short
corners with two minutes to go. But just as the ball looked to
have cleared the ‘red zone’ Kings Langley whipped it back into
the circle and the goal eventually came. So 2-2 but a great
effort from both teams. Next came the U13 White Tigers who
relished the chance at another Friday night game. Hornsby
offered some stern resistance at various points in the game but
the White Tigers were always in control and put together some
very good attacking play. Great work by Alexander Tonkin earned
him three goals in the first half while Luka Grippi popped up at
a number of junctures to mop up loose possession and put the
ball to advantage. The 13 White Tigers gave way to the U17
Panthers who entertained the crowd with a very polished
performance. Records are being checked to assess whether the
first goal was the fastest goal of the SJHA/SHA calendar given
that it was scored within five seconds of the push back. Aside
from this excitement it was the standard of play that caught the
eye. It was fast and controlled and connected and featured some
great team goals – with arguably that scored by James Stephens
being the highlight. Goal scoring to one side the hard work and
hard running of Adam Shields, Luke Dempsey and Tom Wilson was
also prominent.
Still on Friday night and the U11 Panthers fought a very keen
battle with GNS Red; the latter emerging victorious 3-2. As the
scoreline suggests there was not a great deal in this game with
coach Matt McKay congratulating GNS on their play, particularly
their ability to contest possession and shut down time and
space. Crosstown at Pennant Hills the U13 Panthers were clearly
in a determined mood. Fresh from the bye and inspired by Amanda
Wilson’s very clear instructions to distribute the ball, the
Panthers controlled the game and emerged deserved 3-0 winners.
To Saturday and the U11 White Tigers had an early start at
Briars. Briars are a formidable team in this division and took
the spoils this day 2-0 – but credit to the White Tigers who
contested throughout and who are already looking forward to the
next meeting. The U15 Panthers also had an early away start - at
Kyeemagh - and proved too strong for a very young St George
team. Kate Hanna and Tom Craig with ten goals between them took
the honours on the scoring sheet but all players had a goal
assist of some variety – and more pleasing too was the
distribution and goal sense in the attacking circle.
Back at Ryde and the U17 Tigers contended with an early start
(7.45am) and a very competitive NWS side to extend their good
early season form. Three goals to the good and a clean sheet –
what more could you ask – other than to note the increased
coherence in the Tigers’ play. At the comparatively leisurely
time of 9.00am the U13 Black Tigers and Sydney University took
to the field. Not a great deal separates these teams on the
table and so it proved on the day with a 3-3 scoreline. Lots of
chances for both teams so both have gone away thinking ....if
only....The U15 Lions then followed and had one of those days at
the office. Not a lot went right and they came up against a
Sydney University team in red hot form. Hang in there Lions the
good form will return. Rounding out the round the U15 Tigers put
on a very efficient display. Six goals scored and not one
conceded and fresh from Briars scrambling a draw in the previous
round the Tigers were determined not to let their opponents back
into the match.

Around the Grounds, Update on
NAJHA matters, Posting of Results
Object this week is to get the results right in the Around the
Grounds Report. The colour and the movement can hopefully
follow.
We can tell we are nearing Round 7 as there are calls for the
heaters to be turned on at Ryde on a Friday night. And rightly
so. The U11 White Tigers though created their own white heat
with their polished display in accounting for Kings Langley.
Goals to Thomas Orsborn, Kireth Sandhu and Tom Voss capped off a
good team performance and they head in to this week’s match with
fellow table leaders Briars in great form. Next on centre stage
were the U13 Black Tigers who showed a great deal of maturity in
what was a difficult match for their opponents. With twenty
goals scored there were multiple goal scorers but particular
mention to Nick Williams who scored six, and Gabby Dunn, Joseph
Gough and Camille Liebson who all grabbed hat-tricks. Friday
evening was rounded out by another solid performance from the
U17 Tigers. Chris Best’s well-taken three goals were clearly
important to the result but Josh Williams at goalkeeper was
equally instrumental to the result as he ensured that the team
emerged unscathed from a number of sticky situations.
And the action was not only at Ryde. Over at Pennant Hills the
U11 Panthers continued their unbeaten run with a solid 2-0 win
over ND Gold who are always difficult to beat at home. Great
work Panthers. They were followed by the U15 Lions who came from
behind to snatch a very exciting 1-1 draw with ladder leaders ND
White. Great work Lions – unbeaten in your last four starts.
Saturday morning dawned very early for the U17 Panthers who had
a 8.00am start at Moorebank. A closely contested 2-2 game with
the highly credentialed Moorebank team followed. Coach Jeff
McEwen noted the great goal from Nick Wakeling and noted also
the contribution of Craig Williams in volunteering to umpire.
The U15 Panthers also faced an early start but at Ryde. Despite
the early start the team put together some very team-based
hockey featuring great ball movement. Four goals to Tom Craig
with doubles to Isabel de Waal and Declan Moore. While the 15
Panthers were contemplating their social calendars the U11 Black
Tigers were getting busy on the hockey field but primarily in
the second half. Things were a little sleepy in the first half
but the second half was a different story with wave upon wave of
attack. Smiles all round with the three goal victory. Next to
the U13 White Tigers who faced formidable opponents in Baulkham
Hills. Not a great deal in this match with Baulkham Hills just
more adept, on this particular day, at taking their chances.
This was notwithstanding the effort of a very hard working
defence and some very classy saves from Sinead McCraith in goal.
Rounding out the weekend were the U15 Tigers who had the late
slot at Briars. It was a tightly contested game, as it will be
with Briars throughout 2010, but at 2-0 up with four minutes to
go the team thought that their hard work had reaped its reward.
But things in hockey can change in a blink and four minutes
later it was 2-2. Just the way it goes sometimes.
A few issues of note arising from last week’s meeting of the
North Area Junior Hockey Association are as follows:
1. North Area will not be adopting the experimental rule changes
adopted by HNSW for state championships for season 2010.
2. In the U11B pool there are nine teams. It is likely following
Round 10 (accommodating the Bye) that this pool will be split to
create a ‘C’ pool. The likely configuration, based on results,
will be a five team B pool and a four team C pool.
3. In the U13B pool there are currently twelve teams. Following
Round 12 there will an additional team, Manly, who are dropping
down from the A pool. At this time the pool will be split to
create a ‘C’ pool. The likely configuration, based on results,
will be a seven team B pool and a six team C pool. There may
need to be some double headers to accommodate this change but it
will better suit a number of teams that are presently facing
some difficulties in the U13B pool.
4. As a result of this change, when it occurs, there will no
longer be a bye in the U13A pool.
5. I will advise more details on the developments in the U11B
and U13B pools as they are determined.
6. These issues will also impact on the release of the next
instalment of the draw. I appreciate that this impacts on
planning for families but I will advise the next instalment of
the draw as soon as I receive it.
Locating Points Tables
7. I have received a number of questions as to NAJHA points
tables and the like. We were hoping that the new SJHA website
would perform the function of the old SHA website. However this
has not occurred. As a result North Area has set up its own
results site – with tremendous assistance from our own Scott
‘Kiwi’ Familton. We are simply checking some results to ensure
that they are accurate and we hope to be live by the end of this
week if not before. I will advise the link to all concerned and
also ask Neville Fogg to post a link on the website. Thanks a
bunch to Kiwi for his assistance.

Around the Grounds 21-22 May
2010
Your Around the Grounds correspondent enjoyed the delights of
the U15 Boys State Championship and Grafton this weekend past so
thanks to all for your texts and snippets of information.
A particular thank you as well to a number of team managers who
went beyond the call of duty to ensure that we fielded teams.
With so many boys away at the U15 State Championships and our
two U17 teams and the U15 Tigers all playing at similar times we
were stretched to say the least. Two teams played short and each
demonstrated great resolve.
To the hockey and we will start with our Minkeys who had a
fabulous time at their first U9 Minkey Carnival which was hosted
by Briars. In overall terms there were nine teams from North
Area Clubs and eighty participants overall aged from 5 to 9
years of age. Ryde fielded two teams and each team played three
twenty minute games (there was a lot of running@). Games are
played across the field with the field further divided into
quarters. The Ryde players looked great with sparkling white T
shirts, black shorts and Ryde socks.
To the U11 Panthers who enjoyed a 3-1 win over Manly. Manly was
absent some of their key players but Matt McKay was very pleased
with the team’s performance given only three weeks ago they had
‘just’ prevailed in a 1-0 win over the same side. Great work
Panthers. To the most keenly anticipated match of the round
which was the local derby between the U11 Black Tigers and the
U11 White Tigers. The crowd at these matches is just fantastic –
much bonhomie and good natured cheering. These matches are
normally very tight and this was no exemption – just two goals
in it with the Black Tigers prevailing on this occasion.
Proceeding through the ranks we arrive at the U13 Panthers who
had a tough evening at the office against a very competitive GNS
Red team. The Panthers had enjoyed a win against GNS earlier in
the season but sport can be a variable phenomena and so it
proved on Friday night. GNS simply rolled up their sleeves and
refused to concede space, possession, or simply anything. They
enjoyed the spoils and we all look forward to what will be a
healthy competition between these teams as the season
progresses. The U13 Black Tigers continued to show great
attacking prowess in their 6-1 victory over Baulkham Hills.
Fantastic celebrations were evident when Rachel Branch slotted
her first goal in hockey – great to see the reaction of Rachel’s
teammates and the bench. Speaking of good form the U13 White
Tigers demonstrated just that with a composed 2-0 victory over
GNS Green. We understand that it was very chilly at KHC on
Friday night but the endeavour of the White Tigers, in what was
a close match, soon had the circulation going. Great work White
Tigers.
Still at KHC and if the U13s thought it was cold when they took
the field, the U15 Tigers were only visible as they emerged from
the swirling mist. With ten players it was a very gutsy effort
to come away with a 1-0 win – clearly a team effort with Scott
Familton noting, in particular, the performances of Matt Gough,
Brittany Morrison, Tim Taylor and Beth Westmore. In warmer
conditions the U15 Lions achieved their third win on the trot
with a 5-1 win over GNS White. Great work by Wally Welsman’s
team with Wally particularly pleased at the improved cohesion
and the linking passages of play.
The U17 Panthers enjoyed their first home game for the season
and showed some silky skills in putting away seven goals. Nic
McEwen with four goals took out the goal scoring honours with
the goal scoring rounded out by Ben Craig (2) and Campbell
Clarke (1). The U17 Tigers continued their improvement with a
gutsy win over the combined Glebe/Briars team. Coach Michael
English’s highlight of the game was a great deflection goal
scored by Chris McCartney after a fantastic pass by Sam Edwards.
In representative news Ben Craig and Nic McEwen have been named
in the U18 Boys NSW Squad; Tom Craig, Josh Green, Zachary Sharp
and Joseph Radburn in the U15 Boys Squad; and, Kate Hanna,
Alexandra Morrison and Tahlia McKenzie in the U15 Girls Squad.
Congratulations! We wish these players all the best in the
events that lead up to the naming of the 16 person teams.

Around the Grounds 7 - 8 May
The great weather continued and so did the hockey – happy faces
all around and all eight junior teams engaged in action came
away with the points.
Prior to reviewing the weekend past just a word about our
fantastic Minkey players. This forthcoming Saturday, a number of
these players will be participating in their first U9 carnival.
The format will be a modified 6 a side competition played on a
smaller field. Our players are just raring to go so keep them in
your thoughts - their enthusiasm is infectious.
To matters past and once again it was the U11 Panthers who
ensured that the lights were on and the pies were in the oven.
Mere comfort aside they had much to concern themselves with a
very spirited GNS side intent on taking the points. Although
there were six goals scored, the match was always a tight
struggle and the Panthers did very well to recover from the
early GNS forays. This was a team performance but special
mention to Ashley Sproule who is proving to be dangerous in the
circle and adept at taking her chances – particularly crucial in
a match such as this one. Probably the performance of the round
goes to the U11 White Tigers who started the match with just
nine players and who showed tremendous resilience throughout.
Ben Beattie’s two goals were very important (and well taken) but
the work of Thomas Osborn also caught the eye as time after time
he carried the ball, with great control, out of tricky
situations.
The U13 Panthers continued their good form and again showed the
ability to find a number of pathways to goal. Coach Amanda
Wilson continued to call upon her team to deploy a team oriented
game plan and it was pleasing to see elements of this plan come
to fruition. Throughout the game Ben Campey showcased a number
of incisive plays while Iwan Freed has that great (and skillful)
knack of finding his way to goal. Similarly the U13 Black Tigers
are putting together some very good passages of attack. Once
again this was a team performance but all those in the stands
were pleased to see the passing and the unselfish play in the
circle - a particular mention however to David Tocknell who was
very instrumental to a number of very accomplished passages of
play. The U13 White Tigers clearly looked at what had been
accomplished by the other U13 Ryde teams and sought to go one
better. A number of passing interchanges saw the team ‘click’
into action. Again a number of players contributed but it was
great to see the whole team congratulate Annie Carroll on her
first goal in hockey, while there was acknowledgement as well
for the strength of Tegan Lindsay’s second goal which nearly
splintered the backboard.
The U15 Tigers faced this round absent of their players who were
engaged in the U15 Girls Half-State Championships. Credit to the
team and to coach Scott ‘Kiwi’ Familton. Supplemented by a
number of enthusiastic substitutes, they put together a
sustained performance. The first fifteen minutes in the second
half featured some great composure and structure – the best of
their season thus far – and the team left the field a very happy
group. Encouraged by their performance the week before the U15
Lions made it back to back victories with a 3-0 won over
Baulkham Hills. Coach Phil ‘Wally’ Welsman noted that the 3-0
scoreline was a little deceiving in that the match always seemed
closer. The team showed great resolve to keep their goal intact
and to sustain their attacking pressure at crucial moments.
The U17 competition finally moved passed the grading rounds and
into the season proper. The U17 Tigers had the bye but the U17
Panthers were afforded no such luxury – what’s more an 8.00am
start at Kyeemagh. Jeff McEwen demonstrated great player
management skills to get the team awake, focused and mobile at
this time in the morning. Your around the ground correspondent
received few reports on the match other than the note that
despite a 9-1 victory the team will be ‘better for the run’.
In representative news the U15 Boys State Championships take
place this weekend in Grafton. Our best wishes go to all those
who are participating.
Congratulations as well to Tom Craig, Jack Hayes and James
Stephens who were all named in the U16 All Schools Squad.
Thank you to those families who were able to support the New
Players Night last Saturday. For those unable to be present Nic
McEwen was named Junior Club Captain. Grace Craig was a great
ball girl for first grade and thanks also to Jack Cullen, Josh
Green and Declan Moore who responded to the not so subtle
encouragement to help Grace out. Well done guys!
We have a busy weekend in front of us – if you are unavailable
for your match please let your manager know at your earliest
convenience so that team substitutes can be organized in
advance.

Around the Grounds - Weekend
23/24 April
The great weather continued and for those who travelled to
Canberra for the boys’ representative carnival it was great to
have a sleet-free weekend in the nation’s capital!
Friday night at Ryde saw a heady trio of matches. The U11
Panthers had a very dogged encounter with Manly. From the outset
it seemed as though there would only be a goal or two in it –
and so it was. It was their defence that won it for the
Panthers, particularly through a sticky ten minute period in the
second half when Manly held sway. Cody Whittaker had a great
game – wonderfully resilient to waves upon waves of Manly attack
and then with enough energy to score the decisive goal. Fast
forward the U13 Panthers who together with their opponents, ND
Gold, provided a very entertaining and high quality match. Ryde
were first to score but when ND replied with two it was game on.
The Panthers responded with three goals to seemingly take
control of the match but a late goal from ND made for a close
finish. In this period Sophie Parkes showed tremendous poise and
illustrated the value of the short game, while Adrian Rochester
finished off a fine game with two wonderful tackles and
interceptions in the final five minutes. The U15 Panthers had
the late gig and they continued their steady start to the season
with their third consecutive win. It was a measured performance
– with good transfer of the play being a key feature as too the
selfless distribution and tactical maturity of Zach Sharp.
Meanwhile at Pennant Hills the U13 Black Tigers produced a
barnstorming second half to take a 4-0 victory over ND Blue. The
team welcomed Eden Bradford back from injury and he responded in
kind with a high energy performance – Coach Steve Dunn was
particularly pleased that some training drills bore fruit on
match day (training does pay off!). An hour later at Pennnant
Hills the U17 Tigers were pitted against the more experienced
NWS 2 side. Great credit to the Tigers; they persevered right
throughout the night and came away with a draw. Matt Rahme had
an outstaying game, not once giving his opponent an inch let
alone a centimetre. Still on Friday night but this time at
Cintra with the U17 Panthers drawn against the highly
credentialed NWS side – the latter fresh from a 22-0 victory the
week before. The Panthers provided the veritable roadblock
shutting out their opponents for much of the game and scoring
two of their own. NSW scored a late goal to make for a tight
finish but it was the Panthers who prevailed.
To Saturday and it was the U15 Lions who had the early 7.45am
slot at Ryde. Despite the early start the Lions put in a
determined performance. Sydney University was always in front
but the Lions were always on the chase. They closed the game the
stronger team but could not grab the late goal that would have
earned a draw – this despite some dazzling speed on the wing
from Isabelle Stephens. Our two U11 Tigers teams both also had
early starts on Saturday but at away venues. The 11 Black Tigers
were engaged at Pennant Hills and held sway by a goal until nano
seconds from the full time siren. Some great work from the team
however with reports that Rory and Patrick Lewis were just
awesome right thorough their match with the athleticism and
fitness. Meanwhile at KHC the mighty U11 White Tigers were
opposed to GNS Blue. This was clearly a tight match with one
goal to the White Tigers being the only score. Apologies as well
to Thomas Brettell from the White Tigers who was the victim of
mistaken identity in last week’s match report. It was Thomas who
was such an attacking force on the left hand side of the field.
Back to Ryde and it was the turn of the U13 White Tigers to take
on the front-running GNS Blue team. There was great
determination right across the park – with Louise Rafferty
showing the reflexes of an acrobat in goal and Morgan Blamey
composed throughout – even amid some furiously frenetic passages
of play. It was an exciting, close match as the 1-1 score would
attest – both teams were entirely spent at the end and the
canteen exhausted its supply of ice blocks! It was the turn of
the U15 Tigers to close out proceedings at Ryde and they did so
in with style against Kings Langley. The Tigers have found their
feet early and are putting together some great, structured
hockey. Amid this team-oriented play, Kirstyn Button’s work rate
was fantastic; one clearing play in the first half involving a
track back, a dispossession and then a pass to advantage was
just inspirational.
Draw for this week below – no U17 matches due to the U17 Boys’
State Championships – good luck to all who are involved.

Around the Grounds 16-17 April,
Matches for 23/14 April
With chocolate excesses to be worked off everyone was more than
ready for a game this weekend.
Our U11 teams had a great time of it. The U11 Panthers overcame
a very persistent GNS team 2 – 0. While the goal count was low,
this was a highly entertaining match with play frequently
travelling ‘up and back’ at a moment’s notice. Dylan Lavery
grabbed the two goals, with typical alacrity, while Ryan Krensel
played a very mature and purposeful game at full-back. The
following morning saw both Tigers teams take on Northern
District. First it was the turn of the Black Tigers who played a
very entertaining brand of hockey. Nicholas Topfer provided
great drive right throughout the game, always putting the ball
to advantage, while Jacob Curcio was the most enthusiastic of
goalkeepers, and provided a constant stream of encouragement to
his team. The White Tigers were next to take to the turf and
they turned in a very determined performance. They found
themselves a goal down through a very fast breakaway but they
worked their way back into the game with some good team play,
particularly in the second half. The three goals were all a
result of good defence to take possession (initially) and then
good distribution. Emily Thornton worked tirelessly right
throughout the game - constantly tracking her opponent and aware
of the need to promote the ball into space. Similarly Callum
Gordon used the space on the left hand side of the field well
and delivered some great passes into the circle.
The U13 Tigers teams both faced formidable opponents. The Black
Tigers took on GNS Blue who showed evidence, at an early stage,
of their ability to counter attack, and to take advantage of any
penalty corners. Although the score read 2-4 it does not
illustrate the extent to which the Black Tigers kept in the
match. They showed some tremendous determination. Camille
Liebson exemplified this determination with some tremendously
speedy cover defence while Gabby Dunn time and time again
blunted the GNS attack. Kings Langley was the White Tigers
opponents. They too showed great strike power with their two
strikers contributing all of their team’s eight goals. But
clearly this was a game for the forwards with the White Tigers
contributing four goals of their own. There were many things to
take from the match including Connor Boesol who was simply
outstanding and probably single handedly saved another eight
goals. Great work Connor.
To the 15s and the Panthers were engaged against traditional
cross-town rivals Glebe. Although the Panthers dominated
possession in the first half, Glebe scrambled well, and as a
result the score stood at 1-1 at the break. The play opened up
in the second and the Panthers showed grater cohesion and also
precision in taking their chances. Kate Hanna with four goals
showcased her hunger for the ball in the circle, while Lachlan
Sharp was a constant threat to the Glebe defence with his ball
use and ability to dispossess. The 15 Tigers were again engaged
at Cintra and in an entertaining tussle with Briars. Briars held
the ascendancy early but the Tigers worked their way back into
the game with five goals. Linzie Kruger grabbed two of these
goals with great positioning while Chris Moscato personified
commitment and determination. The 15 Lions were required to
compete in the heat of the day and against a fast Northern
District side which jumped out of the blocks early and put the
Lions on the back foot. The Lions fought hard and when they got
the score back to 1-2 a draw was on the cards. In this period
Chris McCartney was tremendous – seemingly covering every inch
of the turf. Yet a draw was not to be. A few chances went astray
and then Northern District finished strongly.
The U17s are still in the process of grading rounds and this
week it was the turn of the Tigers to take on Sutherland 2. The
Tigers were much improved in their second run, and showed
greater respect for possession and the need to keep their
defensive patterns intact. It worked well – three goals and a
clean sheet. Great work Tigers!

Schedule of Matches for this
Weekend - 16/17 April
Dear Players and Families,
Welcome back from our short sojourn.
Details of our matches for this weekend follow at the end of
this email. Your manager will also send you a separate email but
if you are unavailable please notify your manager at the
earliest opportunity.
Just a few matters of note following the meeting of the North
Area Junior Hockey Association:
- Following review of the two grading rounds the number of teams
in each pool is as follows: U11A(4), U11B(9), U13A(5), U13B(12),
U15B(6), U15C(6).
- This means that there will be byes in the U11B and U13A
competitions.
- Given the large number of teams in the U11B and U13B
competitions, the North Area Committee has decided to play one
full round of those competitions before deciding whether to
split those pools into B & C pools.
- The first two weeks were grading rounds so this week (16/17
April) is technically Round 1 for the North Area competition
- U13 Panthers families, I’m sorry you have the bye again. We
sought to have it changed but it could not be moved. There are
only five teams in your pool so all teams will have three byes
over the season. It is just unfortunate that you had one in the
grading rounds and now first up.
- North Area hopes to release Round 4 onwards of the draw next
week.
- The dates for the U9 Carnivals have been set 15 May (Cintra),
19 June (Pennant Hills), 24 July (Ryde) and 14 August (Gordon).
The time will be 9.00am – 11.00am on those dates. More details
will be provided to Minkey families about those carnivals.
- Two U11B games will be scheduled on the grass at Baulkham
Hills. These being the rounds on 15 May and 19 June. This detail
is to be confirmed with Baulkham Hills Council. I appreciate
that everyone’s preference is to play on turf but this
scheduling is done to assist the Baulkham Hills Club in their
endeavour to maintain a hockey presence at Ted Horwood. If it is
not used it will be lost to soccer and any hopes that Baulkham
Hills have of gaining their own turf will be lost.
Just on wider matters our best wishes go to Lily Brazel, a
member of the 15 Panthers team, who is competing for NSW in the
U18 National championships this fortnight.

Around the Grounds - Round 2 -
Reminder of Key Dates
Round 2 – and we endured warm temperatures once again – but the
round had a more settled feel as we entered more calmly into the
swing of things.
Ryde was the place to be Friday night and the U11 Panthers got
the weekend off to a fine start with four goals to the good
against GNS Red – Darcy Keogh opened the scoring and was busy
throughout, as was Karla Nicholl who was forever mopping up
loose possession and breakouts from the GNS team. The following
morning saw the U11 Black Tigers in the 8.00am game slot – early
for most – but not for the Black Tigers. David Buddo converted
some fine work with a magical first time conversion while Eammon
Marha was a constant source of inventive play on the forward
line. The U11 White Tigers also had an early start – Pennant
Hills at 9.00am. Yet it was to be no deterrent – an outstanding
four goal effort ensued with Kireth Sandhu delivering a
sparkling performance, and Tom Voss generating great team
cohesion and tremendous coverage of the field.
Having had a bye in the first round the U13 Panthers were very
keen to take the field for their first match of the season. The
team took some time to find its rhythm but some well chosen
words from coach Amanda Wilson saw the play assume greater shape
in the second half. Varun George was inspiring at centre half
while Alison Westmore had the left side attack of Northern
District always under control. The 13 Black Tigers were a
bubbling happy crew as they assembled for their Round 2 match
and they took this spirit into the game. Eight goals no less
with Nick Williams a very powerful presence n the centre of the
field and Grace Craig always industrious with her work rate and
use of the ball. All in all however this was a great team
performance. The evening before the U13 White Tigers faced
formidable opponents in ND Blue. The 1-4 scoreline did not quite
match the flow of the game but ND was just that little more
accomplished in taking their chances. Tegan Lindsay was a very
consistent contributor right throughout the match – and well
rewarded with a goal – while Harrison Starkey kept retrieving
some very sticky situations with good, forceful play.
No game for the 15 Panthers due to City – Country but the Tigers
and Lions teams provided some exciting action in the U15 ranks.
The Tigers took on a well credentialed Briars team. Briars will
be formidable opponents throughout the season and the Tigers
worked very hard to extract a 3 – 0 advantage. Amid a good, even
performance from the team, Callum Edsor and Tim Taylor both
provided a good deal of purpose and vigour, and were more than
willing to pursue any attacking advantage. In a similar vein to
the 13 Panthers the 15 Lions were very keen to get their first
taste of hockey action for 2010. And what an entertaining match
it was. Six goals scored and not a struck match separating the
Lions and their opponents as the siren sounded. Caroline Welsman
was outstanding in goal, and Matthew Forti, in his first game of
hockey, was the hungriest of centre-forwards – a constant threat
to the ND defence.
To the 17s who are presently engaged in a four round grading
exercise. Hence there will be occasions, as per this round,
where teams will be playing opponents who you would expect to be
in different pools come the season proper. Still it is an
opportunity to build team cohesion, establish combinations, and
try the miraculous short corner variations that you have always
wanted to test.
Don’t forget training for all teams will resume in the week
beginning 12 April.
Competition matches will resume on the weekend of 16/17 April –
Details to be advised.
Minkey will resume Thursday 15 April.
Around the Grounds Report - Weekend of 19/20 March
Round 1 – in temperatures more akin to high summer – who would
have thought it? Although the whole weekend had a feel of ‘will
we get it right on the night’ we managed to field teams as
required and at appropriate venues and times – thanks to all for
your cooperation – thanks particularly to those players who
doubled up to assist other teams. It is always a little tricky
in these pre-Easter weeks as summer sports are still coming to a
close. A word of additional thanks to coaches and team managers
who headed into Week 1 with serenity despite the myriad, last
minute instructions from the Junior President.
All that noted I believe a good time was had by all.
The U11 Panthers kicked off proceedings with a resounding 5-0
victory. Just as pleasing was the style of play on show – good
distribution and a willingness to use the width of the field –
this is a great sign for quite a young team – all but three of
last year’s Panthers team having progressed to the U13s. Great
work by Georgia Carlaw in donning the goalie gear for Round 1.
Still in the U11 ranks and over to Pennant Hills where the U11
Black Tigers had the 8.00am Saturday start. All were ready to go
– a veritable bubble of enthusiasm just ready to take off. Four
goals to the good and we would say they did it in style. Also
with an early start was the mighty U11 White Tigers. While the
scoreline might have read 0-2 there was plenty to take from this
performance. A great willingness to attack the ball and a stand
out performance in goals from Carlin Williamson.
To the U13s and while the U13 Panthers were soaking up the sun
both Tigers teams were engaged in tightly contested matches. On
Friday night the U13 Black Tigers were gallant in their 1-3
performance. Some wonderful passages of play with just the
finishing touches a little astray. Two things to note: Ollie
Broomhall’s blinding pace in getting down to the scoring end of
the field; and, Joseph Gough converting a short corner with an
absolute scorcher. On Saturday morning it was the turn of the
U13 White Tigers to show their mettle – and there was plenty on
display. Down an early goal the White Tigers fought back to take
a 2-1 lead – courtesy of some well taken goals by Sinead
McCraith and Gaurav Gholkar – Kings Langley fought back and
grabbed the equaliser, which set the scene for a tense finish –
credit to both teams - willing performances on both sides.
Moving through the age ranks brings us to the 15 Panthers who
were engaged in a 2009 Grand Final replay against Sutherland
Blue. Some very tenacious and intense hockey was there for all
to see - and this was reflected in a 3-2 scoreline. Credit to
Sutherland who fought back from a 0-2 deficit but the Panthers
held their composure and a wonderfully worked play down the
length of the field saw Sion Freed knock in the winner. Act One,
we suspect. The 15 Tigers had the heat of the day to contend
with on Saturday morning, and against last year’s Premiers,
Manly. It was a match that ebbed and flowed for the first twenty
minutes with the Tigers just with their noses in front. The
goals gradually came – all through great team and lead up play.
Of some note too was Beth Westmore’s wizardry and Brittany
Morrison’s tenacity. To the 15 Lions and they were all ready and
raring to go - but without opponents as Sydney University were
unable to field a team due to summer sport clashes. Store the
enthusiasm guys – next week beckons.

Minkey set to start, team
selections, season start
Dear Players and Families,
We have worked our way through the preliminaries and we are
heading towards the season start. Hooray!
Minkey
Minkey starts this forthcoming Thursday March 11 (5.30pm -
7.00pm). We have many new members and families in our Minkey/U9
program. We extend a very warm welcome to all. We trust that you
will love hockey and enjoy the camaraderie that we like to think
is part of Ryde hockey. For those needing equipment, starter
packs will be available through the hockey shop.
More advice on our U9 carnival matches which will commence after
Easter will follow.
Team Selections
Please find
attached the team
selections for the U13, U15 and U17 teams. The U11 teams will be
announced next week as we are still finalising team numbers. The
coaches and selectors have asked me to commend everyone on their
efforts at the selection trials. The selectors had a number of
difficult decisions to make. Please note that in the U13 age
group the two Tigers teams have been evenly graded. This will
also be the case in the U11 age group when these teams are
announced.
In the U13, U15 and U17 age groups the team numbers are very
tight and we would benefit from having additional registrations
in those age groups. The U13s answered the call last week and
found a few more registrations which made fielding three teams
possible. A few more would be better still, as too in the U15s.
The club would love your assistance here.
With numbers tight across teams it will be an imperative for
families to keep their manager informed, in a very timely way,
of any likely absences. Managers will be appointed over the next
week and coaching arrangements finalised.
Season Start
The U17 teams participate in the SHA administered U17
competition. Projected season start for these teams is March
26/27. Training for these teams will continue to be on Tuesday.
The U15 Panthers participate in the SJHA wide Metro competition.
Their season starts March 12/13. Training for the 15 Panthers
will take place on Wednesday of each week now that team
selections have been finalised. As soon as we receive a draw it
will be distributed.
All other junior teams participate in the North Area Junior
Hockey Association competition. Their season start is March
19/20. Training times for all these teams is unchanged. We are
awaiting the first two weeks of the draw. The first two rounds
are grading rounds although teams will have been provisionally
allocated to an 'A', 'B' or 'C' pool. The results for the first
two matches which will be played under full match conditions
will be reviewed by the North Area Committee over Easter, and
then a full draw will be issued.
If you have not already got a Ryde shirt, or Ryde socks they are
available for purchase through the Ryde canteen.(7-11 size socks
are finally in!).
Regards and once again welcome to all of our new members,
Meg

Hooked in2 Hockey at Ryde Hunters
Hill Hockey Club
With one eye on the forthcoming hockey season the Ryde Hunters
Hill Hockey Club has successfully concluded its second annual
Hook in2 Hockey Clinic.
The clinics are designed as an introduction to hockey, and for
aspiring hockey players to ‘give hockey a go’. Hook in2 Hockey
is a Hockey Australia initiative which is strongly supported by
Hockey NSW. All participants receive four sessions of coaching,
a hockey stick, shin guards and a ball!
The Club welcomed twenty participants, aged between 4 and 13, to
the clinic which was conducted over four days. Coaching
Coordinators John Cullen and Steve Dunn ensured that the clinic
was constantly on the move with a series of drills and
exercises. Each day’s clinic was concluded with an eagerly
contested game, with the coaching assistants, all senior players
at Ryde, acting as supporters, mentors and umpires!
The participants welcomed the support they received from current
players and coaches including Lily Brazel, Ben Campey, Chris
Campey, Matt Cullen, Ben Craig, Tom Craig, Josie de Wall, Tom de
Waal, Maddie English, Michael English, Gill McCartney, David
Moore and Declan Moore.
Despite the warm weather there were smiles all round with
everyone keen to return on the following day. Meg Smith, RHHHC
Junior President, labelled the clinic a great success: “First
and foremost, everyone has fun, and secondly the clinic
introduces kids, who have not played hockey, to the sport. They
may not choose to pursue hockey instantly but they may keep it
in mind in the future” she said.
For those interested in further information about Ryde hockey
please contact Meg Smith on 0418 270 014. or see this website.
